The 2024 report follows our first ever Sustainability Report 2023 and highlights our latest achievements in terms of Vieser’s sustainability targets and focus areas.

Highlights of 2024

In 2024, Vieser took steps forward to reach ambitious sustainability goals by e.g. reviewing the 2023 Double Materiality Assessment, developing Circular Economy practices and improving the quality and scope of CO2 emissions calculations data. In addition, Vieser significantly improved its Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) scoring, exceeding the current SME standard.

Double Materiality Assessment

In the 2023 report we communicated about Vieser’s Double Materiality Assessment, conducted to identify, evaluate, and prioritize Vieser’s environmental and social sustainability impacts, risks, and opportunities on the medium-term horizon. As a result, six material topics were identified: climate change, resource use and circular economy, own workforce, workers in the value chain, consumers and end users, business conduct.

In 2024, the assessment and the six material topics were reviewed, and no changes were made.

In 2024, the assessment and the six material topics were reviewed, and no changes were made. The identified six material topics will guide Vieser’s sustainability efforts, and the 2024 report is also composed around the six material topics framework.

Vieser’s CO2 emissions calculations and CDP scoring

Since our previous and first Sustainability Report 2023, we have now improved the quality and the scope of CO2 emissions calculation data for 2024 reporting and aim to do so in the following years as well.

Vieser’s total carbon footprint in 2024 amounted to 809 tCO2e. Scope 1 & 2 generated 40 tCO2e (5%) and Scope 3 generated 769 tCO2e (95%). Scope 3 Category 1 stands for the majority of Vieser’s emissions (90%) . The newly added Purchased services stood for 21% of the Category 1 emissions. Purchased services were mainly calculated based on spend using NAICS 2024, as information was not available from the service providers. Vieser does not own any manufacturing facilities so Purchased goods CO2e were provided by its supply chain.

Vieser’s total carbon footprint in 2024 amounted to 809 tCO2e.

Based on our 2024 CO2 emissions calculations, we also reached a B scoring in CDP scoring for small and medium-sized enterprises, moving up from score D. This is the highest CDP scoring for SMEs in year 2024, and the most common CDP scoring for SMEs remains in the C to C- range.

CDP scoring is a system used by the Carbon Disclosure Project to evaluate and rank companies based on their environmental transparency and performance. CDP scores reflect how well companies disclose and manage their impact on climate change, water security, and deforestation.

Circular Economy

In 2024, Vieser started using recycled plastic for chosen products in production and switched to recycled plastic in packaging. Last year Vieser also launched a Circular Design handbook to influence the development of new products at an early stage when it is possible to have a major impact on the final product.

Own Workforce

The People Power Index, which offers an overall rating of the survey results, indicated an excellent performance for Vieser in 2024, reaching level seven (81.4/AAA) on a seven-point scale. Notably Vieser has outperformed the employers’ general norm in Finland for the past five years (2020–2024)*. In 2024, Vieser earned the “Most Inspiring Workplaces in Finland” recognition. This highlights our high level of employee dedication and the long-term, inclusive approach to operational development. The recognition is given annually to organizations that participate in the Eezy Flow PeoplePower® survey and achieve exceptional employee survey results.

In 2024, Vieser earned the “Most Inspiring Workplaces in Finland” recognition.

– I am pleased to report some concrete steps forward on our sustainability journey, including the significant improvement in our CDP ranking which, in quantitative measures, demonstrates that we’re on the right track towards a more climate-friendly business, says Janina Ollberg, Head of Portfolio, Supply Chain & Sustainability at Vieser.

Building a responsible business has been at the very heart of Vieser’s strategy for several years. Our ambition remains two-fold: We want to take every conceivable step to reduce our emissions to reach carbon neutrality by 2030 but also, crucially, dedicate time and effort into identifying true opportunities to create positive handprint by solving true problems.

– As a family company, we take our responsibility towards our stakeholders seriously and have a true will to create a lasting, positive legacy. I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to our sustainability team for their unwavering commitment to driving Vieser’s sustainability initiatives, including thorough sustainability reporting, forward, says Annika Jyllilä-Vertigans, CEO of Vieser.

Increasing the use of recycled plastic in production is one of Vieser’s main sustainability goals.

From now on, over 90% of the plastic used in Vieser’s packaging will be recycled plastic. This reduces the environmental impact of our packaging and supports the circular economy. We use about 3000 kg of packaging plastic annually, so this change will have a positive impact on our emissions. Using recycled plastic not only reduces emissions but also conserves natural resources.

– All small grating packages, spare part packages, and some of the floor drain packages are now made from recycled plastic. This is a step towards a more sustainable future, explains Janina Ollberg, Head of Portfolio & Sustainability.

– We are monitoring industry developments, especially regarding bioplastics, and exploring opportunities to reduce the use of packaging plastic. Additionally, we are investigating the possibility of using recycled materials for cardboard packagings well, Ollberg continues.

Vieser designs and sells high-quality floor drain solutions and unique design covers and bathroom products. Production started in Kauhajoki in 1973 and today all production still takes place in Finland. Vieser floor drains play a small but crucial part in prolonging the life cycle of buildings. Since 1973, over 7 million Vieser drains have been installed in the Nordics.

Sustainable development is considered in the design of products and innovations, in materials, and in recyclability – throughout the value chain. Our goal is to serve the markets with stylish solutions that belong in the modern home and improve customers’ daily lives.

Vieser starts using recycled plastic in the production of casting shields and thus takes first steps towards circular economy. Increasing the use of recycled plastic in production is one of Vieser’s main sustainability goals. Work has now started on the parts that support the use of the main products, floor drains.

The floor drain is fitted with a casting shield which is intended to prevent grout and filler from entering the floor drain. Now these blue lids that are familiar to professionals around Nordics are made of recycled plastic.

Production of the new casting shields has already started which means that all Vieser floor drains manufactured from the middle of May 2024 have new recycled plastic casting shields with them. Floor drains with these new shields will appear at distributors and retailers during this year depending on the turnover rate of the products.

First steps towards circular economy

One of Vieser’s key objectives is the transition from using virgin plastic to recycled plastic which can also be recycled. Casting shield change influences Vieser’s carbon footprint positively. Due to the change the use of virgin plastics in the production will degrease with 4 000 kg. Since the casting shield is just a part of the entire floor drain, this has an equally small impact on the total emissions, but still, it is one more step to the right direction on the company’s sustainability roadmap.

“Regarding our main product category, the drains themselves, we are looking forward to the results and progress of the durability tests of the recycled plastics. Floor drains must last at least as long as the bathrooms, even longer, therefore the durability of the materials used in manufacturing the drains must be really high”, Janina Ollberg Head of Portfolio & Sustainability at Vieser explains.

The promotion of the circular economy continues as, together with Paree Group’s other subsidiaries, we strive to minimize the amount of waste and increase the use of recycled materials in production and packaging processes.

Vieser designs and sells high-quality floor drain solutions and unique design covers and bathroom products that have been manufactured in Finland since 1973. Vieser has a crucial role to play in prolonging the life cycle of buildings with first-in-class floor drain solutions.

At Vieser, sustainable development is more than just short-term gains. It involves a dedication to long-term objectives and transparent business practices across all levels of our company. Our focus is on balancing the importance of sustainability and profitability, with both being equally paramount in our operations. Our first sustainability report brings together the spectrum of our responsibility.

At the core of our operations lies our commitment to sustainability. Our values – Caring, Collaborative, Pioneering, and Dedicated – are not just words on paper, but principles that guide every decision we make. Since 2020, we have made sustainability a key strategic focus, aligning ourselves with the principles of sustainable development. For us, sustainability is not only a moral imperative but also a business necessity. It is essential for our market access and long-term success. We constantly strive to reduce our environmental footprint. By innovating sustainable solutions and staying ahead of market trends, we not only drive our business forward but also strengthen our brand, enhance credibility, and foster trust with our stakeholders.

Highlights of 2023

During 2023 we engaged in a double materiality analysis and finalized our first sustainability roadmap. We also made strides in measuring GHG emissions for Scopes 1, 2 and partially for Scope 3, and began incorporating recycled plastic into our packaging. Our focus on Design for Sustainability is now in practice in our new product development, and we are leading the Circular Economy Centre of Excellence of Paree group in collaboration with other Paree subsidiaries. Additionally, all Vieser staff have successfully completed Code of Conduct training by the end of 2023.

Sustainability from governance to execution

At Vieser, our commitment to sustainability starts at the top with our Board of directors, CEO, and leadership team. The CEO holds the primary responsibility for driving forward our sustainability strategy to ensure its successful implementation. Our Board plays a crucial role in approving sustainability targets, roadmap, and key performance indicators. Sustainability is a key metric used to set performance targets. Our leadership team takes sustainability risks seriously, incorporating them into our broader business risk assessments. In fact, our 2023 double materiality assessment also examined sustainability risks and opportunities.

”As a family company, we take our responsibility towards our stakeholders seriously and have a true will to create a lasting, positive legacy.” Annika Jyllilä-Vertigans CEO, Vieser Oy

Climate and circular economy

In 2023, we conducted our first carbon footprint calculations for the year 2022, focusing on Scopes 1 and 2 as well as categories 1, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 9 of Scope 3. While we found that data coverage and quality for Scope 3 are still at a basic level, it became clear that Scope 3 emissions accounted for most of our company’s emissions. This insight confirmed us that our sustainability efforts and focus should be on reducing our Scope 3 emissions moving forward.

In 2023, Vieser participated in the Circular Design training programme organized by Design Forum Finland to enhance our understanding of best practices in the field. Additionally, together with Paree Group subsidiaries we work with an initiative to minimize waste and increase the use of recycled materials in our production and packaging processes. Our key objective is the transition from using virgin plastic to recycled plastic which can also be recycled. Furthermore, we are in the process of shifting towards using more recycled materials in our products.

Upcoming milestones

Our aim is to enhance data quality and encompass all relevant Scope 3 categories to allow us to set Science Based Targets. In the meantime, we are actively collaborating with our suppliers to reduce energy consumption and improve material efficiency. As we are not owning production facilities, collaboration remains our most effective approach for achieving results both internally and externally. Our focus is on closer partnerships with suppliers, customers, and key stakeholders to work towards a future of sustainable materials reuse and recycling.

Sustainability was identified as a key strategic initiative for Vieser in 2020, and we have made significant progress towards formalizing a roadmap aiming to achieve net-zero operations by 2035. Moving forward, we will release an updated report annually to demonstrate our ongoing dedication to sustainability.

An EPD (Environmental Product Declaration) is a third-party verified report that presents the environmental impacts of a product throughout its lifecycle.

EPDs are increasingly required in the construction sector as they allow the detailed environmental assessment of different building materials. EPDs follow the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology and provide standardized data on, for example, emissions related to materials processing and manufacturing. EPDs are valid for five years.

EPDs granted for extension rings, floor drains, gratings and linear floor drains

Vieser’s product group specific EPDs list all the extension rings, floor drains, gratings, and linear floor drains that are covered by the EPDs. The EPDs comply with the ISO 14025 and EN 15804 standards and are available at EPD library maintained by The International EPD® System program. All four EPDs are also available in the material bank on our website:

Download Vieser’s EPD for extension rings here. (EPD registration number: S-P-11693.)

Download Vieser’s EPD for floor drains here. (EPD registration number: S-P-05962.)

Download Vieser’s EPD for linear floor drains here. (EPD registration number: S-P-11692.)

EPDs are a step forward in our sustainability work

At Vieser, sustainability initiatives are at the core of our business strategy, and we are committed to taking concrete steps toward a better future.

“The EPDs help our clients to receive reliable, transparent, and up-to-date information about the environmental impact of our products,” says Janina Ollberg, Head of Portfolio, Supply Chain & Sustainability.

The interior seeks inspiration from the local nature

The hotel interior includes plenty of details that resemble the local nature and landscapes. Both the hotel rooms and public spaces feature nuances of the breathtaking landscapes of Koli National Park in wooden details and earthy tones.

The natural material choices are also present in the hotel bathrooms. The color scheme is peacefully neutral, and the stone pattern of the large tiles brings an earthy look to the space. The stylish stone patterned tile continues from the wall surfaces to the floor and works well with the concrete-like sink and the copper-tinted attention wall tile.
